I'm loving a breakfast smoothie at the moment. It has all of the goodness of a strong first meal of the day, with little preparation and even less washing-up. A winner in my book.
This particular one is quite different to most of the smoothies that I drink, which I guess makes it a strange choice as the first recipe to post. But what can you do!
After starting out simply as a venture in adding oranges to smoothies (I didn't really believe it possible), this recipe happily turned into something delicious and really very healthy. Apart from the obvious plusses of drinking a tall glass of fruit and veg (c'mon you know this..), there are some really interesting and complementary benefits of oranges and blueberries.
Blueberries, ever a favourite for adding colour to a smoothie, are revered for their antioxidant content. More specifically, they have been linked to improved digestion, skin and hearth health, and even have a positive effect on your mental health and your skin -- so you'll be happy inside and out.
Similarly, oranges are also linked to clearer skin and better digestion, with added benefits like promoted heart health, and defence against stroke, high blood pressure and kidney stones. Both oranges and blueberries have also seen links in cancer prevention, but personally I'm always a bit wary of that claim, given how often we see it thrown around.
I of course made this using my NutriBullet 600 series, so if you have one of these babies or anything in the same bracket (Nutri Ninja, Vitamix, etc) you should be good to go. If not, maybe swap out the orange for some 100% orange juice. Additionally, feel free to add ice, or use frozen fruit to make it cold.
